Swallowtail Lace Shawl

It's finally finished! I've been working on this shawl for seven months and I'm so glad to be finished!  Not just because it looks lovely and feels incredibly snug but because my sanity can't take anymore dropped stiches, forgotten yarn overs and loopy nupps. If you are going to attempt this shawl, make sure you have heaps of perseverance.

What's on my spindle #1

Having recently finished knitting my latest knitting project, the Swallowtail Shawl, (just waiting for the blocking equipment to arrive!) I've turned my attention towards learning to use a support spindle.

Fist Full of Euros

It's high noon. The heat is baking. You have just strolled into a sleepy mountain village. The square is cobbled, a church on the left hand side where a few locals are sat nearby in their rocking chairs as they eye you up.  All that is missing are a few dry tumbling weeds. You can hear the theme tune from one of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns in your head, 'Wah Waaah WAAH!'...

Battered Halloumi Cubes

Ah, Halloumi. The squeaky cheese. There are few things that can make cheese even better than it already is. Batter is one of em! An idea that wouldn't have occurred to me if I hadn't seen it on a menu when dining out at a Village Inn Pub. Here, I try to recreate the warm cheesy yumminess.

Knitting WIP: Swallowtail Lace Shawl

For those of you that knit, it is likely you will have already heard of the Swallowtail Lace Shawl by Evelyn A Clark which was published in Interweave Knits, Fall 2006. For those that haven't, the pattern is a free download on Evelyn's website evelynclarkdesigns.com and on Ravelry.

Transferring sewing patterns onto tracing paper

So trying to read and understand a sewing pattern, let alone its instructions, can be a bit daunting especially for a beginner. I don't know about you but I end up muttering out loud not very much unlike a scene of Black Books where Bernard Black was trying to do his taxes.

Colette Patterns: Myrtle Dress

Can't really remember what I was looking for or why I ended up in the fabric section of my local haberdashery shop, but I had to stop when I spotted a completed Myrtle dress on one of the mannequins.

7 Amazing Items Made From Colour Pencils

On an outing to Haworth, West Yorkshire, I passed by Hawksbys gift shop where in the window was the most amazing wood bowl made from coloured pencils. Inside the shop there was yet more beautiful jewellery, trinkets boxes and other items made form colour pencils. I've been seeing more and more of this art form popping up in shops so I have been trawling Pinterest and the internet to curate a board of these fabulous pieces of art. These are my favourites.

Decorate a Straw Hat for Summer

Last summer I visited Housesteads on what felt like the hottest day of the year. Even the sheep were lined up along the stone walls trying to squeeze themselves into the little shade they offered. I remember seeing a sensible young woman wearing a straw hat and thinking that was a very good idea! Unfortunate for me although the sunburn and hives eventually went away...

Make your wardrobe POP with painted hangers

If, like me, your wardrobe is looking a bit lacklustre, full of mismatched and broken hangers then this is the project for you! It is so easy anyone can do with a few basic supplies and a fair bit of free time.

Cat Yarn Bowls

Pinterest has been taking up a lot of my time lately. Have to say there are some amazing styles and designs of decorative yarn bowls out there. I've curated a board of some of my favourites here.

Handpsun Yarn

Handspun Yarn

Some months ago I went a little (read: quite a bit ridiculously) overboard buying up various types of wool fleeces. Two have been washed, the rest are still bundled up. Tired of smelling like Woolite, I took a break and reached for some pre-combed top already in my stash.

Product Review: Xcut Corner Punch 5mm

Earlier in the year I started a Project Life Album which I was inspired to do when I watched a video by Lily Pebbles, a beauty blogger that I follow. I was particularly intrigued because I noticed all the corners on her photos were rounded which led me to do some research on Project life and to purchase the item this post is about.

DIY: Homemade Mayo

If only I had known it was this quick and easy to do, I'd have been making fresh mayo years ago! It always seemed something only the likes of celebrity T.V. chefs could do. But that is not so. You and I can do it and all you need are a few simple ingredients and a spare minute or two.

What's on my bobbin #1

This is my second spinning project which I have been working on for some time. Blue Faced Leicester has been used as the base and blended with luxury fibres on hand carders. The end result will be a fine 3-ply yarn.

Fontitude

(Spoiler alert! The following fictional synopsis is based on TV's fictional thriller/crime series, Fortitude. Names have been changed to protect the innocent.)

In a makeshift town, on an island, in a really cold place, where fonts with little feet weren't allowed and the writing was on the Glacier hotel ice wall, occurred the most heinous typographical crime of the Century Gothic. Oh, a few people get bumped off...

Mad for Washi

During a recent visit to Manchester, I overheard a sales assistant tell a gentleman that he could probably find what he wanted at Fred Aldous. That's an art supplies shop. At this point my ears pricked up and I went, 'Oooooooooooooo,' in my head. There aren't many art supply shops near me. Hobbycraft is OK but it often doesn't have the things that I'm after. I was on a mission, you see, to find Washi tape.

Make your own paintbrush in Photoshop

Photoshop is a hugely powerful image editing software program. Despite having a copy for years, I am still finding new functions that I didn't about know before. Like how to make a custom paintbrush!

The Unconventional Yarn Bowl

I received this super cute tea pot as a Christmas prezzie but as a non-tea drinker it's not likely to get much use in the traditional sense...
